I.                     Charity, agape

A.                 We use charity as human benevolence.  Giving to the less fortunate.

B.                 the will loving God as supreme Good in Himself, for Himself alone, and others for his sake (CCC 1822-29)

C.                To understand this better, we must look at various kinds of human love


II.                   The 3 Natural Human Loves of C.S. Lewis' The Four Loves

A.                 storg: the affection that mothers naturally have for babies, pet owners have for pets, natives have for homeland

B.                 eros:   desire for union proceeding from need

C.                philia: friendship, highest human love

D.                All can go bad without God


III.                  Agape, charity is divine love

A.                 Aquinas defines it as friendship with God: no longer servile fear.  Now fear of offending one you love.

B.                 John Paul II defines it as self-gift

C.                loving God for himself & others for his sake

D.                sharing in the generous gift-love of God himself, love without need


IV.               Charity perfects justice

A.                 Without grace, canít be Just.  Yet grace makes us more than Just.  Love of enemies goes beyond justice.

B.                 Hope & charity: different approaches to the feast of the Ascension

C.                Charity is the form of all the virtues


V.                 Highest of all

A.                 1 Cor 13: the greatest of these is love

B.                 Twofold commandment
